Final answer, word 2
Plain text: circled letters HIOTERMGEATUS unscramble to ROUGH ESTIMATE.
How this puzzle comes together
A shopper unsure how much sandpaper he needs wants a ROUGH ESTIMATE — grit that is literally rough played as a ballpark figure. Start with RHINO and AFTER: both five-letter racks snap once RH opens the animal noun and AFT plus ER closes the time word, and together they feed H, I, O, T, E and R into the bank. CACTUS comes next because its four circled letters often reveal ESTIMATE early. Save EMERGE for last: ERMGEE hides MERGE plus a leftover E until you stop treating MERGE as the whole answer.
The October 29 words at a glance
| Scrambled | Answer | Letters | Circled |
|---|---|---|---|
| OHNIR | RHINO | 5 | H, I, O |
| ETFRA | AFTER | 5 | T, E, R |
| ERMGEE | EMERGE | 6 | M, G, E |
| SCTUAC | CACTUS | 6 | A, T, U, S |
| HIOTERMGEATUS | ROUGH ESTIMATE | 13 | Caption answer |
Hardest word: EMERGE
ERMGEE tempts MERGE first and leaves a stranded E that looks like a duplicate leftover. The six-letter verb only appears once you keep both E letters — one after M and one at the end — instead of rebuilding around the five-letter near-miss.
What this puzzle teaches
When a six-letter scramble offers a clean five-letter word plus one leftover vowel, test whether that vowel belongs inside a familiar prefix — here MERGE was the decoy and EMERGE needed the extra E after the opening M. For more general patterns, see How to Solve Jumble Puzzles Faster.
Word-by-word breakdowns
Each word has its own page with solving notes, a letter map and its definition:
- OHNIR → RHINO (short for rhinoceros)
- ETFRA → AFTER (later in time than, or following in order)
- ERMGEE → EMERGE (to come out into view, or to become known after being hidden)
- SCTUAC → CACTUS (a spiny, often leafless desert plant that stores water in a thick stem)
- HIOTERMGEATUS → ROUGH ESTIMATE (a ballpark figure, played against sandpaper that is literally rough)
