How this puzzle comes together
The caption sets up a math joke: the whiz liked odd numbers, so numbers divisible by two are even, and he thought they were EVEN BETTER. Start with WITTY and RIVER, since both fall quickly to their endings (-TY and -ER). EXPEND then gives you two of the four E's, and by that point EVEN is already visible in the circled letters.
